Dangerous Levels of Radon Mitigated in Somerset, WI
Challenge
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has become the second-leading cause of lung cancer -- second only to cigarette smoke. Marcy in Somerset, WI had not yet had her home tested for radon. She recently learned how dangerous exposure to radon gas is, so she contacted American Waterworks to have her home tested as soon as possible. Her test results showed that her home was above 4 pCi/L, which is the Environmental Protection Agency’s required action level, so our Design Specialist developed a personalized mitigation plan for her home and she scheduled the installation.
Solution
Our Foreman installed the radon mitigation system by creating a suction point through the concrete floor in the basement and inserting a PVC pipe. The pipe runs up the basement wall and out of the home through the rim joists. Then, he installed a fan along the pipe to ensure the radon gas is pushed up and away from the home. The gas is then expelled from the home above the roof. The installation only took a couple of hours to complete, and now Marcy has peace of mind that her home is protected from such a dangerous gas!
